Being Alive San Diego – New Year, Greater Need
It’s easy to forget how fortunate most of us are – enough to eat, medical care, a place to call home – people that support and love us.
For some, these basic things are hard to come by or non-existent. I have seen the numbers of people seeking assistance grow and I wanted to share with you what our friends at Being Alive are doing to help our friends and neighbors.
-AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) – Being Alive is the largest enrollment site in the region. Being Alive assists hundreds of clients obtain free medical coverage each year (987) and as more and more sites close, it is one of the LAST places people can go to get enrolled – if you have ever filled out government paperwork, you understand how it is almost impossible without assistance.
-Insurance Coverage for PreP (as of Jan 1st) is available and Being Alive is there to handle those enrollments.
-“Daniel’s Market” is a farmer’s market style grocery distribution that serves over 800 San Diegan’s each month – providing fresh meats, produce, dairy and shelf stable items for our neighbors in Hillcrest.
-Holistic AIDS Response Program (HARP) – is the only alternative therapy program for San Diegan’s living with HIV/AIDS and provides; chiropractic care, acupuncture, reiki, massage and other healing arts are provided by licensed practitioners. For some, this is the difference between mobility and walking with a walker or even being in a wheelchair.
-Recreation Program – Being Alive provides free weekly YOGA CLASSES and tickets to SPECIAL EVENTS (ticket valued at approx. $200,000 annually) to concerts, plays, sporting events and local amusements – this may not seem like it’s important – imagine NEVER feeling connected to your community because you were house-bound….the loneliness and isolation is overwhelming. This is in many ways one of the most important programs they offer.
-Helping Hands Moving Program – it’s easy when you are barely getting by to become homeless – one move can be the crushing blow. Being Alive provides moving services (including a box truck) to assist people and help keep them from becoming homeless.
All of these programs are provided free of charge, right here in San Diego….and ONLY one is funded by the government (HUD).
Please give what you can, your support means the WORLD to a lot of people……your support is the difference between barely living and BEING ALIVE.
